Young Judar [Adventures of Sinbad]
This is one of those cosplays you have on your radar forever but because it's a black and white drawing from the manga that you're like "hmm, what colors should I do?" Well Ohtaka decided to bless the internet with a colored version! Once that image dropped, that very day I was at the fabric store buying up the materials. I went extra. I used nothing but brocade and sateen lining. Even the trim was all brocade! As you can see, the official colored image is different from what was drawn in the manga, so I chose that as my main inspiration.
I loosely used the Simplicity kimono pattern for this but altered it. The top is a kimono top but with different sleeves. It's a separate piece that snaps together at the bottom under the obi. There is another white kimono top underneath but it's sleeveless, it's just to give the illusion of two layers. Plus I was aiming this for Katsucon and wanted some extra layers for warmth. This ended up being too hot for summer cons so he became strictly a winter cosplay.
The obi is the only non-brocade piece, it's a nice white printed kona cotton with sateen lining. It has a zipper in the back. The gold piece in the front is sewn on while the black sash is actually a belt that snaps in place from behind. It was used with left over sateen fabric I had used for the tabards lining. I actually had made the shirt last and ran out of the initial red brocade from the skirt, but when I went to buy more it was not in stock and I was running out of time. So I went with another pattern but I actually like how it came out, the contrasting patterns was actually a nice idea! I'm sure the different patterns will bug some folk but I ended up liking it.
The skirt is circle skit that's elastic at the waist. It fits very well but it's HEAVY. Lining this thing was a pain. Silky fabrics are very hard to hold in place fyi! It was massive but the easiest thing to sew body wise. The trim was horrible. I had to make my own trim using gold brocade and that in itself was a bad experience. It frayed so much from it's original size. This made me never want to make something with brocade again. The skirt weighs about 2 pounds but it was the warmest part of the costume! Plus, it hid my feet so I could wear any shoe I wanted!!
The tabard was very easy, just a rectangle. The gold trim was again my hardest battle. This part takes the damage of most fraying because I just tuck it in over the skirt so it's not secured the best way but it works? The circle is satin stitched and this is also lined with sateen. This part of the brocade was left over from a previous project where I over estimated how much I would need, so this let me free up space in my fabric bins!
The wig was probably the hardest thing I've ever made. I'm not good with wigs and buying this wig online was just not what I wanted because they didn't match. I high over estimated the time it would take to make this beast and let me tell you....I hated every minute of it! Wearing it was even awful. It eventually fell apart after 3 wears and I tossed it. I do have plans to remake it but motivation eludes me. The wig was from Ebay that came in such rough shape I was afraid I'd have to buy a new one. Have a overnight soak in some water/fabric softener, it actually came out wonderful and I really loved how it looked. The rest of the wig was wefts from Epic Cosplay in various lengths glued onto different sizes of styrofoam balls (that I painted black to better hide my mistakes). It took about 3 months to make and it weighed about five pounds. My head HURT.
The prop I had commissioned by a friend that I think was some amazing work. It had a little of paint chipping but nothing I cant fix. Props are not my strong point so I was glad to have someone else make this and he's made a few of my props before. He's no longer taking commissions unfortunately.
